University of San Jose

Some have asked about Justin’s university. It’s located about 10 blocks from our house. Everyone walks to class. There are students that come from all over the states to attend classes mostly in Ecology, Biology and other sciences. The Environmental Ethics class Justin is offering fits nicely into the mix. They are answering questions like “What obligations do humans have to the health of the land, the animals and the ocean life?” and “Are those obligations to the those things themselves or does the obligation really lie with the next generation of humans?”

They have a variety of really interesting and thought provoking readings that they are doing and they are writing a couple of articles that they hope to get published as op-ed pieces in their local newspapers back home. They have also been on a few field trips as a class. They have been to a private reserve, an eco house building company, and a sustainable coffee processing plant.

His class is made up of 3 Fort Lewis College students and then 3 others, 1 from Chico State and 2 of which are from Italy (whom we hope to meet up with again while we are in Europe).

All of the students are living with host families who feed them, house them, do their laundry and give them lots of practice in speaking Spanish.

We have been on a number of trips with both Justin’s students and a mix of the students from other classes. It’s a great group of people to hang out with. They have been super friendly and cool with the kids. Honestly, some of them took the plunge or the jump or the zip on account of seeing a 9 and 11 year old do it without a flinch. They are like little mascots.

The actual school is a building shared with a number of other businesses and schools, one of which is a preschool so there’s a playground in the back. But it’s a really nice and beautiful place to be with open air corridors, a nice little cafe and a turf soccer court in the back.  The boys love to take their futbols and go to visit Daddy at work.
