FLC Voices Magazine
The Fort Lewis College Foundation is the 501(c)3 arm of the college. Its mission is to enrich the educational and cultural opportunities at Fort Lewis College by encouraging and stewarding gifts for scholarships, programs, and facilities. The Foundation publishes a magazine, FLC Voices, twice a year devoted to the college’s alumni audience.
Challenge
The existing alumni magazine was discontinued in 2012 on account of dwindling budget and lack of relevance and reach. However, with a push to develop lifelong supporters of the college and to increase alumni donation rates, college administration prioritized a relaunch of the magazine. With the goals of celebrating the accomplishments of its students, faculty, and alumni while building a broader donor base, a budget for a newly reimagined magazine was approved in 2007.
Solution
I built the magazine templates and style guidelines from scratch in 2007 and launched a robust publication that highlights the many accolades of campus. The editorial is provided by a team of writers, and I manage the entire design and production of the 40 page magazine. Now in its 15th issue, the magazine is published twice a year with an audience of 43,000 alumni, donors, faculty, staff, and community partners. The publication is the most significant piece in the strategic suite of materials used by the college in stewardship and recruitment initiatives.
