House chores: a comparison

The laundry situation is still quite different from how we do it back home. You may remember our Costa Rican laundry days. It’s similar here. Dryers are rare in Europe as I am finding. So most people just hang out their clothes to dry. Instead of timing laundry around the rain like in Costa Rica, we work around the freezing weather. When you live in a place with snow, it becomes an inside draping of sorts that reminds me of the artists Christo and Jean-Claude, especially when you are doing sheets.

We have a really small washer that heats it’s own water (thank goodness because the hot water heater for showers is not that big) and has super long wash cycles of over 2 hours. It doesn’t require me to fill it with a hose, drain it by hand or even transfer the clothes for the spin cycle.  It’s luxury!

The clothes are hung on a drying rack that you can put inside or outside depending on the weather. Apparently, in order to keep the humidity in the flat at the appropriate level in the wintertime, we need to open the window for 3 min each day while things are drying out inside. Probably not a bad idea to get some fresh air into the house.
