Costa Rican Curiosities: 1

The kids are pretty adventurous about trying new things. Until this guy turned up on our table. Aeneas, serious as a rake in the face, said “They fried the whole thing! The eyes are still on there! That is disgusting.” Apparently a whole fried fish put him over the edge. He lost his appetite for the rest of the meal.

I am a huge seafood fan and will order it anywhere that it makes sense. Justin and I have had a disagreement over where it’s appropriate to order and expect good seafood here.

I pretty much order it anywhere in Costa Rica. Justin swears that ordering it in the mountains is a bad idea. Because it’s so far from the coast, what do they know about seafood? The truth is, the mountains here are not that far from the coast. It’s a coastal country!

I chock it up to him still being in Colorado mode where the nearest saltwater is 12 hours drive doing 85 mph. Here, you can actually see the ocean from the mountains so it doesn’t make sense to apply the same rationale and some of the best seafood has been eaten in the mountains.

This delicious whole fried Snapper was devoured in LaFortuna at the base of the volcano in a great seafood restaurant called Snapper’s House. The adults were gorged, and the kids left wanting.

Guide books will tell you to avoid the water and the ceviche. We avoid the water but the ceviche is too much to say no to. Costa Ricans know ceviche and it’s one of their local favorites. It’s everywhere. Nothing about ceviche is “staring back at you”, so the kids love it. This particular dish came from what looked like a total dive in another non-beach town of San Ramon, the town that we are living in. What is not to like about a place called Deliciousness of the Sea?
