A dance with death

Aeneas has a love hate relationship with anything creepy. It’s like he enjoys the mystery and suspense but in the face of it, goes sprinting the opposite direction in terrified screams. He likes to observe, but from a safe distance mind you. He gets it honestly from his mother.

I have no idea where it came from but I have this strange fear of getting in bed at night when the lights are out. I had to come clean with Justin years ago as to just what I was afraid of. Somehow, when the lights are off and it’s night, there is a high possibility that a creepy boney arm of a half decayed old women will reach out and grab my ankle just as I get in bed. And somehow if the lights are on it renders her powerless. His response through snickers was an incredulous, “Seriously?!? Anna. For real?”
Being the kind, supportive and caring husband that he is, Justin has proceeded to flip the lights off just as I reach the bed and to hide in dark rooms in darkened hallways jumping out at me any chance he gets ever since we lived in Missouri. He threatens hiding under the bed but in nearly 18 years of marriage, he’s not brave enough to end the good thing we have. Either I will die of a heart attack or resolve to never talk to him again, neither of which contribute to a healthy lasting marriage.
In the spirit of Halloween and meant as a treat but possibly taken as something less so, we took the boys to the Donatillo Catacombs while in Rome. Because there’s nothing like watching the fear of others to build one’s own courage. 😉 Donatillo claims to be the largest underground burial grounds with some 17 kilometers on 5 levels of winding pitch dark tunnels. We toured a mere 20th of those tunnels with a guide. Saw crude frescos, a random assortment of bones and imagined the horrible conditions of being a grave digger of the times. The boys loved it but I assure you, Aeneas was touching one of us every moment of the tour. And without the startle factor, I did just fine too.
